Significance of the Project
The series of military campaigns carried out by the Spanish colonial government against the defiant local chieftains of what was then undivided Cotabato was mainly responsible in the peopling of the area with individuals of Spanish roots. The establishment of the Spanish garrisons in Cotabato meant gathering a substantial number of Spanish soldados, who after the course of their military tour of duty, met and intermarried with local women and settled with their families in the areas.
In time, these families grew larger not only in terms of size or membership but also in stature and prominence. Latter-day generations of Cotabateños came to regard them as the old-rich families of Cotabato.
Tracing the origin, growth and achievements (or even failures) of these families by way of a formal study will provide more information about them and their influences in the community that will lead to a better understanding of the local history of Cotabato.
The research output may be used in teaching Mindanao Education in the tertiary level. This will provide history teachers additional reference materials for their students in this course.
