The Grand Patriarchs of the Cotabato Caballeros
The Cotabato Caballeros trace their lineage to two men, Don Tomas Roales y Requeña and Don Antonio Lopez y Sousa. Both came to the Philippines as soldiers of the Spanish colonial army around the second half of the nineteenth century when the Spanish government was once more turning its attention to the southern Philippines. They found themselves therefore as part of the Spanish force engaged in military and pacification campaigns in the Moroland.
Presumably in the course of their military service, there were occasions when they found themselves in the Cotabato region. Presumably also, they liked what they found in the region.
By the time both retired from military service, they had attained the non-commissioned rank of sergeant. Upon their retirement, they both returned to the Cotabato region and purchased, presumably from their life savings as soldiers of the Spanish army, vast tracts of land in the area.
They also would raise their respective families in Cotabato. Don Tomas Roales never remarried after losing both his wife and son to cholera epidemic that plagued Jolo during his tour of duty there. Nevertheless, he was able to perpetuate the Roales bloodline in this part of the world through the marriages of his nephews whom he brought over from his native Spain to homegrown Cotabateñas.
Antonio Sousa's progenies on the other hand sprang from his marriage to a Tagala who was then under his employ in his business.
