Sousa Clan: Its family historical background
Don Antonio Lopez Sousa was born in Utrera Sevilla, Spain. He entered the Spanish military service in which he rose to the non-commissioned rank of Sergeant. It was as a Spanish soldier that he arrived in the Philippines towards the closing decades of Spanish rule in the Philippines.
Sometime during his service in the Philippines, he married Eusebia Espiritu, a Tagala who was formerly under his employ. Antonio and Eusebia had four children: Carmen, Soledad, Manuel, and Maria.
At the end of the Spanish-American war, he retired from military service and settled in Tamontaka, Cotabato where he started a business. Tamontaka used to be the site of the Jesuit Reducción and had as a consequence a fairly prosperous Christian community.
In Tamontaka, he put up a variety store. He also bought two small boats, which he named after his daughters Carmen and Soledad. He used these boats in transporting goods to and from the town of Parang, the trading center in the region at that time.
Don Antonio saw to the formal education of his children, even sending one of them -Maria- to study in Spain. The three others studied in a local school with Manuel dropping out eventually for some reasons.
Maria later entered religious life under the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) while the three other children got married and settled in Cotabato. Soledad, one of the daughters, got married to Manuel Roales thereby linking the two clans by marriage.
